Wheel Fine Dining

I decided to have dinner out with a difference while exploring the hotel road stretch and old quarter in a plush white leather Jetwing tailor-made tuk tuk complete with champagne and butler style service.
The bottle popped as the champagne bubbled over as it was poured into my crystal flute. Sipping on the elixir of life the tuk tuk dinner evening was explained by the extremely charming Anthony my butler cum driver guide. “We are going to try different courses in different places while travelling though the exciting social area of Negombo known by many as ‘Little Rome’ due to the high number of beautiful Catholic churches situated here,” he explained with the world’s biggest smile.
Taking off
So off we went flying past Café J a new buzzy bar and exciting social networking point to have my starter at the centre of wellness the Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions. A health retreat that was reflected in the prawns served to me as starter adorning a delicious salad with a healthy light dressing. A wow spot to fine dine overlooking the beautiful pool and deluxe villas with attached delightful treatment rooms in which the people on the next table explained just made the real world disappear all together.
Once finished it was back in the tuk tuk to enjoy the beach at Jetwing Sea. Along the way Anthony told stories about how the city is reinventing itself and finally restoring some of its old magnificent colonial gems in the old fort area, which in turn was attracting a whole new crowd of tourists. The next stop, lit by flamed torches was great fun with a scroll to unroll explaining the types of soup that would be served. Piping hot handmade bread was given to me and the seafood soup with tortilla ships was the perfect way to enjoy the star speckled sky and delightful beach style fine dining. I found myself during the course of the evening kicking off my shoes to enjoy the sand between my feet and to really get into the spirit of this rather unusual fine dining experience.
Beach to the Blue
My next stop was at The Jetwing Beach sands restaurant Black Coral Terrace Bar, part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World where fine dining is a way of life. The restaurant staff provided me with a sorbet to cleanse my palate from the fishy fish soup and then they brought in under silver platters the spectacular main course a medley of fish and rich variety of grilled meats. The lamb of course was the highlight and all this was set against wonderful jazz music and superb personal service. I am then whisked off for desert at Jetwing Blue, driving along high speed while enjoying the glitz and glamour of the stretch.
As they prepare three delicious desserts, I go for a quick dip in the hotel bluer than blue pool. Refreshed and ready for more food I am taken to the restaurant with my bucket of bubbly to sit and enjoy the most 7 stunning views with open to environment dining. Here, while counting sail boat lights I tuck into my three naughty but nice chocolaty desserts.
Talking to the waiter it is hard to believe Negombo’s Blue Oceanic was once on six room hotel, which has grown in size, stature and taken on every aspect of what a truly environmentally important in a big property with thousands of tourists using its facilities every year.
The hotel in its makeover has been literally beaten black and blue with splashes of vibrant paint local art gems of an artist Amity, who is brilliant in every sense of the word and very much a product of Colombo’s urban jungle, whose recycled artistic brilliance (and believe me this is Recycled) art pieces adorn the hotel’s many cavernous spaces including the main reception with a piece that literally rips across the room check in area.
The art in the hotel was a direct response to Jetwing’s reuse philosophical ethos of recycling everything, so much so some pieces are reduced to sheer atonal minimalism, with the culmination of the installation in the central hallway reception area, where it’s impossible not to be wowed by this masterpiece in blue. Simply breath taking said one tourist comparing it to the big blue whales that frequent the waters around Sri Lanka.
Partying all night
Back out in my luxury limo style plush white leather tuk tuk I enjoy the strip as it come to life with music blaring from the cooler than cool bars.
The tourists are moving with the music and in all directions, men and women pour out onto the pavements lit by the sea of neon lights that have made this a hip and happening place.
Jetwing with its tuk tuk fine dining tours is turning Negombo into a destination and not just a stop over to catch a plane onto somewhere else.
So if you want a wheel good time book a tuk tuk dinner at The Beach front desk. Just make sure you have a nightcap before heading off in the plushest tuk tuk of all time.
A top favourite cocktail is one leg in the pool, which will give you a quick thrill and inspire you to go out and party. To end your adventure try a refreshing coconut from a stall on your way home to which ever hotel you are staying at.
Just be warned Saturday night is just one big party and if you are not too tired from your food crawl do go out and join them.
