Vesak Festival 2016

Vesak in Sri Lanka is a religious and cultural celebration which is mostly held during the full moon day of the lunar month of Vesak, which is usually in the month of May.
Vesak is a festival held to honour the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha in the Theravada tradition. On Vesak day Buddhist devotees and followers gather at the temple, clad in simple white dress and recite verses of praise to the triple gem. It is a festival of happiness and people are reminded of the importance of giving and bringing happiness to those who are in need.
The celebrations include religious observances and festive events throughout the country. Some things not to be missed during the season include;
- Religious events at various temples where devotees will pray and sing hymns of praise of the holy triple gem
- Free refreshments from the food and drink stall called Dansalas
- Brightly decorates roads with colourful lights and flags
- The beautifully crafted pandals that depict stories from the life of Buddha
Vesak in 2016 starts on the 21st of May 2016 and will continue in the days following.
