Travelling to East Coast With Sri Lanka Tailor-Made
by · Published · Updated
Sri Lanka is famous for its history, culture and beaches. Having a fair knowledge about the history of the country and the beauty of the Sothern beaches we thought of experiencing the east coast of Sri Lanka. The journey from Colombo to Tricomalee was quite a long journey, but we didn’t feel it as we had beautiful scenery around us to keep us captivated. We passed beautiful Sri Lankans paddy cultivation and also came across traditional villagers on our way to Trincomalee.
Trincomalee is well known for its natural harbor and Pigeon Island, the unknown factor was Thiriyaya which is situated few kilometers away from Trinco. This is also one a historical sight in Sri Lanka which is not so well known amoung travelers. Looking at the historical value of this sight this has been one of the oldest historical sites, belonging to the 2nd century B.C. Thiriyai formed a prominent village of Jaffna’s Vannimai districts in the medieval period. The site is home to Mahayana Buddhist vatadage ruins worshipped by the locals during the rise of Tamil Buddhism in the area.
There are approximately 300 steps to climb in order to reach the Vatadage.
I was a bit reluctant to visit this place at first, but my thoughts changed as soon as I felt the historic charm of this ancient place, and also as I experienced the view from the top overlooking the ocean.
Travelling with Sri Lanka Tailor-Made was not only about visiting the place, but an experience that added value to our journey and gave us experiences that we filled our hearts and minds with happiness.
