Whether you’re wandering solo or planning a family vacation, Travel + Leisure’s annual list of Best Places to Travel is the ultimate source for singling out the go-to vacation spots for the year ahead, a welcome reminder of all the things that inspire vacationers to travel in the first place.
The travel magazine has listed Sri Lanka among its list of The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2020. From hotel openings, state-of-the-art culinary scenes and intriguing new escapades to boosts in transportation have made the Pearl of the Indian Ocean more accessible than before.
The magazine emphasizes the fact that Sri Lanka is a famed surfing destination that caters to all experience levels, and now with numerous hotel openings in 2020, makes the Island nation a luxury destination to be reckoned with.
The country possesses different seasonal patterns on each side of the island; when one coast is calm, the other is bumpy. The monsoon rains take turns thrashing the coast from different directions, making the Island a year-round surf option. The chief surfing season for the South coast commences from November to May – a time when the waves are in absolute perfection. The best season for the East Coast is from April to October when the waves are longer.
The foremost places for surfing are the southwest, south and east coasts. The most renowned spots are Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa in the southwest, Weligama in the south and Arugam Bay in the east. Though the waves in Sri Lanka are not as colossal as those found elsewhere in the world, they are smaller and much longer. Waves off the east coast can be surfed for as long as 60 seconds if one has the muscle for it.
It’s not merely the jaw-dropping architecture, mouth-watering cuisine and welcoming smiles which awaits you on a Sri Lanka Surf holiday, the island is also one of the best localities to attempt surfing for the first time or to solely brush up on the basics, pushing your surfing to the next level among some of the most gorgeous backdrops in the world.
