The Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel – Lunch, and Laughter
by Jetwing · Published · Updated
Can you guys believe that August has just zipped past us, and that we’re nearing the end of the year? For me it still feels like May/June.
So, I have several announcements to make. I am moving to Australia in January for my studies, but that doesn’t mean this blog will cease. I will keep on blogging on the restaurants I come across in the great land of Aus, and every time I come back to beautiful Lanka, you will see updates of Lankan eateries. My goal is that this blog will continue to be a source of good food reviews from wherever in the world I travel to!
So now, on with the review. A bunch of my friends and I headed down to Galle one and a half weeks ago. The goal was to have lunch at the Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel. Guys, the hotel is beautiful, the setting is even more beautiful, and the food was amazing! I have included a map to help you guys out. The fact that we have the highway makes everything so much easier!
My friend Sajinda and I. Awkward potatoes.
That is my friend Yash at the cove. I cannot put into words just how beautiful and soothing this place is. The colours are so vibrant and brilliant. We decided on the lunch buffet, and can I tell you, I was very VERY impressed with the array of food available.
The first course had a myriad of salads, breads, and fresh selections of vegetables, lettuce, salad dressings and sauces. What impressed me the most was the Wakame Salad. Wakame is a type of seaweed, and Wakame Salad is a popular dish in Japan. I love the Wakame Salad at this buffet because it tasted fresh, zingy and soothing, all at the same time. In addition, I tried out the Nicoise Salad (again, one of the BEST Nicoise’s I’ve had in Sri Lanka), as well as cold potato salad, coleslaw, dinner rolls and a selection of cold cuts that included pork, smoked chicken, beef and turkey. My plate of the first course was this:
On this plate there’s a big heaping of coleslaw, smoked beef, blanched broccoli, Wakame salad, Nicoise Salad, Green Bean Salad, potato salad and so on.
And in this plate, grilled pineapple, salad dressing, shredded carrot, smoke turkey. This was my friend Ishraq’s plate.
Moving onto the main course, there was a massive array of different cuisines. From pastas, to Chinese fried rice, to noodles, red rice and so on, the variety was unbelievably amazing. Needless to stay, I loaded up on all the goodness like a piggy. I took pictures of all my friends plates because they served dishes that I avoided, therefore you can get an idea of some of the things we had. The highlight of the main course for me, was their crumbed fried squid and their mutton curry.
This picture is a perfect capture of my plate and it’s crumbed fried squid. The calamari was pefectly cooked. In the background you can spot deep fried prawns, the fried rice and a bit of the black beef curry.
This one has a heaping pile of pasta, squid, prawns and fish in cheesy bechamel sauce.
Mutton madness! My friend Ishraq’s plate. I can’t blame him for all this mutton, it really was delicious. The mutton was sweet, salt and soft and there were interesting textures going on such as spring onions giving a crunch to the dish. As amazing as all this food was, the dessert selection honestly blew me away. It really did. I think my favourite desserts were the Pineapple Cream Cup and the Mint and Peach Parfait. I did not like the chocolate souffle, it had too much bitterness from alcohol in it. I did not like the Coconut Panacotta either. However, all in all, the desserts were absolutely stellar.
A selection of fruit, some jelly, and chocolate mousse.
Coconut Panacotta, Mint and Peach Parfait (SO SOOTHING ON THE PALATE!), Chocolate souffle, random peaches and strawberry garnishes that I stole from other desserts
So in terms of reviews, the first course gets 8/10, second course gets 7/10 and the dessert course also gets 7/10.
Therefore, the overall rating for this meal is 7.3/10. On the Expensivo Meter, the standing for this meal is at Donald Trump Eats Here [LKR 2000+], but considering that it’s an all you eat before at a reputed hotel and also considering that the array, variety and the diversity of food is highly commendable, the price is not unreasonable. I really hope you guys try this out, and if you do, please do comment on here. Thank you for reading this post, and I will be back soon.
