Sri Lanka Navy launches a passenger ship today for whale watching from the Ashraff Jetty in the Trincomalee harbor in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.
The ship carries 100 passengers for three hour and six hour journeys in the sea. It is operated by the Navy three days per week for the local and foreign tourists.
Hotline +94 777 323050 is open for the public to contact the tour organizers, Sri Lanka Navy says.
The ship operated from Galle in the Southern sea since January this year in the whale watching season. During the high tide season in the South the whale watching begins in the Eastern seas from May and continues till September.
Trincomalee is a well acclaimed tourist destination for its clear blue seas. The other coastal areas where whales are seen in Sri Lanka are Kalpitiya in the northwest and Aluthgama, Ambalangoda, and Hikkaduwa in the South. Between December and April months the seas south of Dondra Head and Mirissa are known for Blue and Sperm whales sightings close to shore.
