Nelu flowers which bloomed just once in 12 years are now seen in Horton Plains National Park. There are 30 Nelu species available in Sri Lanka while 24 of them are inherent to the country. Strobilanthes pulcherrima, S. sexennis, S. viscosa and S.calycina are flowering in these days at Horton plains. Flowers which bloom in 12 years are fading away after 2 weeks. These flowers will bloom again in 2025 during the season.
This species of flower has been found by British national, Thomas Far who built up Far bungalow in Hotan Plains in 1881.
According to him, these flowers had first bloomed in 1883 and then in 1905.
