Dear Partners and Friends,
It is two weeks since tragedy struck Sri Lanka.
We pause for a moment to remember
all those who lost their lives and pray for strength for their loved ones who
were left behind to grieve.
Hiran and I, together with a few
colleagues toured the rest of the country over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Commencing in Colombo we toured along the beautiful Southern Coast visiting our
teams at the different Hotels. We overnighted at the Jetwing Lighthouse,
Galle and then proceeded to Yala, Pottuvil, Wellawaya, Nuwaraeliya and back to
Colombo.
Having toured the North, South, East, West and the Center or most of it over the last 2 weekends, we found that people are back to their normal lives.
Yes, there were white flags and
banners of sympathy in almost every town we passed, but life moves on.
Our teams at different locations are naturally feeling low, but this is to be expected. We discussed with them the reality of global terrorism that has entered our little Island and what we need to do for our safety and for the safety of our guests. Also, how we should never put our guard down again, whether it be in Sri Lanka or when we travel overseas.
Irrespective of their ethnicity or
religion this diverse group of Jetwing Associates are committed to continue
their Legendary Service. They are committed to treat everyone as Members
of One Family.
What we observed was heightened security and the presence of the security forces around the Island, some places more than others. They were extremely cordial and polite and carried on their search operations very efficiently. I burst with admiration and respect to these selfless men and women in uniform who are risking their lives to save those of the rest of us. Indeed, all of Sri Lanka is grateful to them.
We are also grateful to the World Tourism Forum (WTF) who at their 2019 session on the 2nd and 3rd of May in Switzerland, dedicated a panel discussion on the situation in Sri Lanka, and reassured their support and informed everyone, this can strike any country, anywhere and at any time. If you have the time and the inclination, please watch the session on the link below –
As I write, the situation is calm
and both Government and Private schools have re-opened this morning
(2019/05/06), with adequate security being provided. Unfortunately, the beaches
are empty, and the Hotels are awaiting the arrival of guests to welcome them
with the traditional Sri Lankan warmth.
Thank you again for your interest
and support for Sri Lanka!
With warm wishes,
SHIROMAL COORAY
