The Kandy Perahera also known as the Esala Perahera in Sri Lanka is a festive event held to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. This is a historical event dating back to the 3rd century BC which was held mainly to request the Gods for rainfall. It usually held during the month of August, and can go on for around 10 days.
The event is a religious and cultural celebration where the procession includes cultural dancers who perform fire dances, walking on stilts and other cultural dances. The performers are of different ages, all skilled in their area of dance or acrobatics.
The recommended time for being seated for the perahera includes evening at 6:00pm and at 2:00pm for the day perahera. This is mainly due to the fact that roads will be closed after these times.
