Jetwing unveils solar power plant at Sri Lanka resort
Move forms part of hotel’s effort to become carbon neutral
Sri Lankan hospitality company Jetwing has opened the country’s largest privately-owned solar power plant at the Jetwing Yala hotel, on Sri Lanka’s south coast.
The new energy system features 1,122 solar panels covering an area of more than 5,000m². It will generate 1,500 kWh of solar power per day, accounting for approximately 40% of the hotel’s daily electricity needs. The move forms part of Jetwing Yala’s aim of becoming the first carbon neutral hotel in Sri Lanka.
“With Jetwing Yala, we aim to achieve what we consider the ultimate future standard – a fully carbon neutral resort,” said Jude Kasturi Arachchi, director of Jetwing.
“We have long been known for our sustainable practices, but with the opening of the solar park we are now very close to making this vision a reality. No expense has been spared, from the quality of the system to even ensuring its installation; initially, we were considering a roof mounted system, but decided later on to move onto a ground mounted one for purely aesthetic reasons to preserve the concept of Jetwing Yala.”
The new system becomes the third such solar power plant set up by Jetwing in Sri Lanka, following existing facilities at the Jetwing Blue and Jetwing Sea hotels in Negombo, which opened in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
