History, Temples and Lifestyles of Passikudah
by · Published · Updated
Everyone knows Passikudah for its splendor, sun kissed beaches, swimmable oceans and up and coming luxury stays. Being part of the Sri Lanka Tailor-Made team we experienced first-hand the unique untouched culture of this East Coast destination, along with an experience at Sun Aqua Pasikudah.
The lifestyle experience
The experience starts with a visit to the Seruwawila Temple, to come to knowledge about the history of Lord Buddha and a series of events that followed after his death in colorful paintings.
The temple is an ancient Buddhist temple in Trincomalee with a very little recognition than it deserves. What’s more remarkable is that, since the temple isn’t crowded at any given time of the day (except for full moon Poya days) you will have the opportunity to meditate or leisurely take a walk around the temple grounds at peace.
The history of the temple in brief
The temple was built during the reign of King Kavantissa (2nd century BC) containing the sacred forehead bone of Lord Buddha. According to sources, the Seruwila region was a vast swamp or villu where the flood waters of the Mahaweli Ganga collected. This villu was the home of large flocks of teals (seru) during migratory period. That perhaps was how the place came to be known as Seruwawila.
If time permits, take about an hour or two to meditate and indulge you in the bliss the temples aura.
Then you will start the lifestyle journey by first taking a visit to the snake temple. This temple is a very short visit as there are only a couple of shrines to be seen with its offerings of flowers and oil lamps. Legend has it that snakes can be seen in the temple ground on certain evenings to feed on the food offerings that the nearby villagers offer. They believe by doing so, their lands will be blessed and saved by all harms.
Visit to the popular Mari Amma Kovil in the neighborhood
Being one of the few highlights in the area, Mari Amma Kovil is a charming and almost six centuries old Hindu temple. A large number of Pasikudah’s population is devotees to Mari Amma, who in South India is the goddess of rain. She is closely associated with Goddesses Parvati, Durga and Kali. You’ll see her guarding the top of the temple entrance, flanked by a myriad of other Gods – people pray to her commonly for bringing rainfall, offering for fertility and curing illnesses.
Final visit to a villager’s house and settle down for a delicious rice and curry lunch
At the end of your experience, take a visit to a villager’s home (village that was once affected by the war) and learn all about their traditions and daily routine. This will be of a different experience as you might appreciate your travel through Ceylon understanding different cultures. Settle down for a delicious lunch afterwards.
After the visit to the village, you will be escorted back to your hotel Sun Aqua for a relaxing evening.
