First guidebook on responsible tourism in Sri Lanka: ‘Paradise Exorcised’ at HSBC GLF 2012

On 19 January 2012 at the Galle Heritage Villa by Jetwing, history will be made – Sri Lanka’s first guidebook to responsible tourism will be launched amidst the backdrop of the prestigious HSBC Galle Literary Festival.
Titled ‘Paradise Exorcised,’ compiled and written by the renowned Juliet Coombe, the book seeks to educate the traveller on the implications and effects caused by global tourism.

Rather than the typical message designed to scare, Paradise Exorcised takes a look at the growing importance of sustainability initiatives being implemented, and practiced at one of Sri Lanka’s largest resort chains, Jetwing Hotels.
The launch will take place on 19 January from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Galle Heritage Villa by Jetwing; free passes are available at the HSBC Premier Center in Flower Road, however in limited quantity.
Featuring a comprehensive overview of measures such as the use of biomass boilers at Jetwing St. Andrew’s, solar power and CFL lighting at Jetwing Sea, self cultivation of vegetables at Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions, as examples, Juliet brings to the forefront initiatives which can be practiced in everyday life.
She hasn’t been alone in this adventure however; David Altabev, a Chartered Engineer and an expert in sustainable design left his life in London to help write and photograph, as well as the talents of young Asia Hewapathirana, who produced the striking and awe-inspiring cover painting.
The other members of the team include Charles Risius and Rikaza Hassan as Editors, Kavinda Dhammika providing art direction and Catherine Hewapathirana’s meticulously drawn maps.
Being one of a kind in scope and imagination, the book has attracted the attention of prominent personalities such as Mahela Jayawardena, who contributed the foreword. Being a passionate protector of the environment, the elegant cricketer has supported the development of the guidebook from its inception.
In addition, HSBC and Small Luxury Hotels of the World have come aboard as partners on the project, being powerfully involved in the field of sustainability and responsible business practices.
