Expo Rail provides a luxurious train ride, all the way across the country to the ancient naval city of Trincomalee from Colombo Fort. It’s a night train starting at 9pm & reaching Trinco by 5am. It’s a popular belief that before visiting any other place, it’s customary to proceed to Koneshwaram Temple. You’ll enter through the Fort Fredrick to go to the Koneshwara Temple. Inside the fort you can see lots of spotted deer who’re very familiar with humans & they would just walk pass by. A bath from the hot water wells of Kanniya would be a refreshing end to your 1st day. The 7 wells are supposed to have 7 different temperatures. Don’t forget to take your own bucket for bathing purposes.
On the next day you can take a boat ride to either Pigeon Island or venture deep into the ocean, in search of Blue whales, Sperm Whales & Spinner Dolphins. But whale watching happens only from May to September every year. In the evening you can visit the Thiriyaya Watadage, where it’s believed to house the hair strands of Lord Buddha.
During the third day morning you can visit the naval museum where lots of LTTE & ancient war artifacts are displayed. You’ll have to obtain special permission to go into this museum. In the evening you can visit Seruwawila.
Trincomalee is one of the best naval hubs in the world where ancient battles have taken place. In a London naval museum, they have a ship displayed by the name, HMS Trincomalee – in honour of these great battles.
