Explore Sri Lanka – Kalpitiya
by Jetwing · Published · Updated
Kalpitiya is a sleepy fishing village which was recently brought into celebrity status due to the dolphin watching opportunities that the ocean outside the city provides & the pristine clear beaches. The quality of the boats that’re being used for dolphin watching is still very basic. One must venture deep into the ocean to see whales, unlike in Mirissa. But this is the only place in Sri Lanka where you can witness Pink Dolphins. Unfortunately there are only 6 -7 pink dolphins left in the whole area.
There’s a famous church in the area called Thalawila church, where many Catholic devotees visit every year.
While staying in Kalpitiya you can visit Wilpattu National Park to witness leopards, sloth bears, wild elephants, spotted deer & many more animals. Inside Wilpattu is the place where King Vijaya landed in Sri Lanka.
Thirty to forty five minutes away from Wilpattu is the UNESCO World Heritage city of Anuradhapura with a whole collection of ancient ruins.
There’re several good quality hotels in Kalpitiya and this is a place to look out for the future.
