Nilgala forest in Ampara is a haven for bird watching. Over 100 species of birds have been spotted in the area. There are many elephants roaming around in the vicinity as well. It’s beleived that this was the herbal forest of a Sri Lankan ancient king called Buddadhasa. Inside the park there’s a black stone road laid down by King Dutugemunu. This path spans from Kataragama to Anuradhapura so that his warriors could find the correct path.
The Makare is a place where a natural stream of water flows steadily & it hits a collection of huge rocks & the river dissapears all of a sudden in to the earth & surfuces a few miles ahead. The river flows beneath the rocks & amp; during a time of drought you can see this spectacle.
The famous “Crossing” of wild elephants happens in Parakrama Samudraya, a water tank bordering the Nilgala Forest. In this water tank there’re several islands with vegetation & elephants swim from the main land in search of food. This is the only place in Sri Lanka where you could witness elephants swimming. Best time to visit would be during August.
Deegawapi temple, a place visited by Lord Buddha rests in Ampara. This is another major attraction in the city. Rathugalla Veddhas are a divided fraction of the famous Dambane veddhas who struggle to live their way of life. The way of the vedda is dying with the Rathugala veddas due to poverty.
Expo Rail travels to Ampara (Gal Oya station) & back.
This is a lost city in Sri Lanka which is rich with ancient history & natural wonder.
