A road is a common path for any to get about to a desired destination; and the journey to that destination narrows down to the experience that path has to offer. Such is the southern expressway. Expressways and other new emergences in infrastructure are a new phenomenon to many Sri Lankans collectively – the transformations of simple roads to ‘swift-ride’ platforms is an epitome of growth and sustainability the nation has to offer to her people and visitors alike.
Being critical about many aspects of travel; I found my trip down to Galle several weeks back to be absolutely terrific. For the many that have traveled on the commonly ventured route, the drive ends up being a tad bit edgy and strenuous despite the breathtaking views of beaches and other sites along the coast.
From the moment of commencement as you drive along you can witness a silk experience the entire time. You may rest your eyes without disruption, as the smooth pace creates a relaxed sphere for travel, from the time you start till you get there.
One of the amazing sights is the change in vegetation as you drive along. The opening sight is lush paddy contrasting against the complexion of the earth vibrantly shooting up; you would see storks, cranes, cattle and other inhabitants around the paddy.
Through paddy you come across the waving coconut palms, prevailing high. Coconut palms are a common sight along and you would find them flocked through some areas and when you drive further it would be spotted amid the scenery as the coast line is not far off.
As you progress further you would see low land tea plantations, though they do not share the majestic splendor or taste of the hill country tea, however they do illustrate a lovely sight. You would glimpse tea refining stations as you drive by. Tea from the lower land is used for medicinal requirements and as coloring for various purposes.
Rubber plantations are revealed gradually after tea, these are remarkably beautiful trees – the barks are spotted by darker shades with splashes of green atop. The arrays of trees are lined beautifully to reveal picturesque scenery.
These plantations are also the prime cash crops of ancient and modern Sri Lanka; they still stand as important products for trade and recognition for this enchanting isle.
The southern expressway gives you the opportunity for a comfortable ride and indispensable sights.
