Anoma’s Whale Watching Diary (9th Feb 2010)

Hi everyone, I’m Anoma. I believe in the thrill for adventure. Day in and day out, as a Naturalist, I help people discover an enjoy the “spice” of adventure. It’s with great pleasure I share my experiences with everyone on my recent whale watching tours. Yes… it’s whales!
It was 6.15 in the morning as I packed my stuff to guide a immensely keen family of four as we left the Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel in Galle. The exact location for whale watching is an area close to Galle named as Mirissa. As 15 more joined us, our journey started from there at 7.15 from Mirissa as we welcomed the blue ocean to soak us with the awaited adventure.
It was a pleasant surprise to see a mix of many nationalities in my tour pack. I guess it exemplifies that passion for adventure is simply universal and there’s never been a better motivator for me!
And it starts…
Right from the beginning we were looking for the whales. We saw some Grate Crested Terns passing us by, followed by some fishing boats which passed towards the harbor. SUDDENLY… we were lucky to spot a Green Turtle! As an hour passed by and we were lucky to witness more than 20 Spinner Dolphins!
Now here’s the twist my friends… while we sailed further we were able to spot a Blue Whale spout! We keep following the whale’s spout… suddenly which… disappeared. We kept our voice low, our senses open yearning to spot the beautiful creature again. A few second… the next thing we heard was a sharp big blow beneath the deck! So see, two beautiful whales have reached our boat so close… just a matter of a few meters!
You need to have all the luck in the world to see such a view… priceless as I may say. An experience of a lifetime for my travelers. As for me, I just love my job!
Have a great day!
