For close on 40 years, World Environment Day has been hosted every year by a different city under a different theme on the 5th of June. First established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, and first held the following year, World Environment Day is “a global day for positive environmental action” and encourages individuals to become agents of change in support of sustainable and equitable development. This year on the 5th of June, Jetwing Hotels demonstrates its commitment to the environment and community with events organized around the island, in key locations:

Negombo:

For the World Environment Day programme, there will be an open-competition across nine participating schools for two categories; Year 6 – 9 and Year 10 – 13 to create awareness among the school children that certain waste material can be re-used. The competition involves creating exhibits or items made using any materials that is usually thrown away (Eg: bottlecaps, glass bottles, paper, aluminium cans, etc) out of which make exhibits / items are made.

During the day, there will also be presentations made to the school children on climate change and Sri Lanka’s biodiversity by the resident naturalists of Jetwing Hotels. Famous screen personality Irangani Serasinghe who is also a patron of the Jetwing Eternal Earth Programme (JEEP) will be the guest of honour and chief judge of the competition. The event will be held at Loyola College, Negombo and all are welcome to walk in and witness the efforts of the generation to come, and is jointly organised by Jetwing Blue, Jetwing Beach, Jetwing Lagoon, Jetwing Sea and Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions.

Galle:

Jetwing Lighthouse is set to commemorate World Environment by conducting a beach clean-up programme with the associates of the hotel; a tree planting programme with the participation of guests around the hotel premises and to raise environmental awareness among the next generation a presentation on Sri Lanka’s biodiversity will be made to the students of Meeadala Vijaya Vidayalaya by the resident naturalist, Anoma.

Sigiriya:

Jetwing Vil Uyana will conduct an awareness programme on the Human Elephant Conflict in collaboration with Mr. Jayantha Jayawardene (one of Sri Lanka’s foremost experts on elephants) and his team at the Biodiversity and Elephant Conservation Trust. However, due to the schools not being available on the 5th June due to prior commitments with Poson Poya, the programme will be conducted on the 19th – 20th June. Presentations will be made to Kimbissa School and Inamaluwa Maha Vidayalaya targeting school children and to elders at the Kimbissa and Rangirigama villages.

Nuwara Eliya:

Jetwing St. Andrew’s has organised a World Environmental Day Walk and Environmental Exhibition with the support of Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, National Zoological Gardens, and the Wildlife Department and Forest Department. 500 school children are expected to participate, and the event will run from 08:00am – 01:00pm, with the walk commencing from Jetwing St. Andrew’s and proceeding through the Nuwara Eliya town to Cinicita Hall.

Jetwing Hotels have been at the forefront of environment conservation, energy efficiency as well as sustainable practices and initiatives through the Jetwing Eternal Earth Programme (JEEP). Some of the activities falling under JEEP include Trees for Life, which is used to educate both schoolchildren (identified as future leaders) along with guests on the issues facing the globe such as climate change through regular awareness programmes. Trees for Life also allows individuals to purchase a tree which will be planted at St. Anne’s Shrine, Talawila, which helps them towards offseting their carbon footprint. In the field of energy efficiency, Jetwing has utilized measures such as biomass boilers, LED and CFL lighting, solar and wind power as well as recycling waste water and minimizing the use of plastic. Jetwing Sea was recognized for its sustainable design and re-creation by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) in 2012, winning a Gold Award for Corporate Environment Programme; with Jetwing Vil Uyana winning a PATA Grand Award in 2007 for the Jetwing Youth Development Project, a novel initiative that focuses on molding unemployed youth with skills relating to the hospitality industry for a brighter future.
