Colombo, Sri Lanka listed by CNN as, “Where to Travel in 2022: the best destinations to go”, along with other countries such as Chile, Dijon (France), Disko Bay (Greenland), and many others…
Any idea on what the capital city of Sri Lanka is? Hmm… Did you think it was Colombo? Colombo is more of the “commercial capital” of Sri Lanka. The capital city, however, would be Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.
Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is only 5 miles (8KM) away from Colombo. It was also the capital of the Sinhalese kingdom of Kotte from 1415 to 1565. A visit to the capital of Sri Lanka would be really worth it as it has so much history behind it.
Colombo on the other hand is the busiest city in Sri Lanka. Some may even call it the business hub if the island. Colombo, however, has so much more the offer from being the melting pot of cultures, races & religions, restaurants/hotels to experiences.
Jetwing Colombo Seven, Galle Face Hotel & Residence by Uga Escapes are some of the major hotels in the busy of Colombo. Colombo offers a range of markets too, here you should be able to find the fragrant teas and spices.
Let’s not forget the countless experiences offered within the city of Colombo. You can do walks around the city, or if you’re not in the mood for a walk, you can certainly hit the paddles and start cycling. Sri Lanka is famous for its magic powder used in cooking – the spices of course! Let’s make time for some authentic Sri Lankan food like hoppers, pittu, and some rice & curry.
Who says you need to travel out of the city to spot some amazing wildlife? Of course, if you want to spot leopards and bears you need to but, don’t be fooled cause Colombo is also home to many animals such as the Western purple-faced langur (Semnopithecus vetulus nestor), Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), Rat snake (Ptyas mucosa), Green imperial pigeon (Ducula aenea), and Saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus).
City life in Sri Lanka is definitely better than what you thought it was like, so on your next visit to Sri Lanka make sure you spend some more time in Colombo and pay a visit to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.
