“From individual species through entire ecosystems, biological diversity is vital for human health and well-being. The quality of the water we drink, the food we eat and the air we breathe all depend on keeping the natural world in good health.” ~ António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General ~
United Nations have declared the 22nd of May 2019 as ‘The International Day for Biological Diversity’ (IDB). Main purpose of this invaluable declaration is to spread awareness on biodiversity related issues and increase understanding in order to reduce the human-nature conflicts.
This year’s International Day for Biological Diversity focuses on biodiversity as the foundation for our food and health and as key substances to transforming food systems and improving human well-being.
The fact that our parents, to grand-parents to our ancestors having the opportunity to consume clean, non-homogenized food years back even when the society was not diverse at all. But, in the contemporary modern days, it has become the opposite where due to the increasing needs and wants of humans, societies becoming diverse yet the globe becoming one village have affected on the global diet to be homogenized. Non-diverse. Thus, purchasing patterns to, consumption patterns to the disposing patterns have changed in a way threatening the biological diversity of the entire ecosystems. Food and health routine of the human-beings is therefore negatively affected.
Thus, this year’s theme aims to leverage knowledge and spread awareness of the dependency of our food systems, nutrition, and health on biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. That is to reduce the human-nature conflicts and have a balance in the ecosystems in order to save the biological diversity, the human existence and well-being on Earth, while contributing to other Sustainable Development Goals, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, ecosystems restoration, cleaner water and zero hunger, among others.
